Settled and Unsettled

dreamsWhen you were young, you had dreams, you had a vision as to what your life would be like. You imagined what you would be doing and how you would be feeling in the way distant future that is now, that is today.

Today your life is working right. The work is being done, the bills are being paid, and the family members are all fine and doing their thing. You feel settled and have that feeling, “All is well with the world,” as Aldous Huxley said.

Yet for many people, and perhaps you are one of them, there is a vague feeling that crops up from time to time, a feeling that something is not… je ne sais quoi. There is an inexplicable unease, but you can’t quite put your finger on what is wrong. When you think about it, you realize the big charges, those exciting moments that lift you high for days or weeks on end, are not coming as often as they did.

Perhaps life is not that great for you – you don’t like your job, do not get on with the people you work with or are trapped in an unsatisfactory relationship or by your responsibilities. You are stuck with the situation and, while it works to some degree, you are not able to do what you want or what you expected.

As you sit with the awareness that life is good, or that it works, but it doesn’t make you feel great, you realize not only are you settled, but also that you have settled. Then you feel a twinge of guilt at your discomfort or that you have no cause to complain.

There are good reasons you are not doing what you expected or living the life you thought you would. If you are a business owner, an entrepreneur, there are even more good reasons and justifications.

Perhaps you do not know what it is you want to do, or what would bring back that sense of excitement or high. You don’t know your calling, your purpose, or what you are supposed to do. You can’t go after it because you simply don’t know what it is.

Perhaps you know what it is, but you don’t have the time, money, space, or equipment. You see how it is all possible, just not for you, or not now (see my article Are you a WhenI?). Or you think that pursuing that vision, dream, or feeling would mean risking everything you have that is working just fine.

So you let it go. You focus on gratitude. You love your life, your family, your job, your friends, your customers… and it works, for a while.

It doesn’t have to be like that. You DO NOT have to give up what you have in order to do what you love. And no, it is never too late. I would be honored to help you get back that wonderful feelingof being truly, really, absolutely alive!
