If branding is such an important part of marketing, why do so many people do such a poor job at it? I think the answer is that it is such a hard thing to define; it is extremely hard to communicate. Explaining what a “brand” is takes real effort on the part of both person explaining and the person who is trying to find out.
Sure, there are many simple definitions. These definitions treat a brand, not as marketing, but as a sign. Like an “Open” sign that gives straightforward information that the place is open for business:
- Dictionary.com: “A type of product manufactured by a company under a particular name.”
Simple definitions can also treat a brand as a symbol. Like the Peace symbol, the brand stands for something and evokes thoughts, feelings, opinions, and/or impressions.
- Marty Neumeier, in ZAG: “A customer’s gut feeling about a product, service, or company.”
- Jeff Bezos: “A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person.”
Many experts have a very hard time stopping at a simple definition, because branding is about marketing:
